Los Angeles Experiences Record-Breaking High Temperatures Only Days Following Major Winter Weather.
In the wake of torrential rains that resulted in floodwaters across sections of the city, the City of Angels is now confronting abnormally warm conditions for this time of year.
Record-Shattering Heat
By Friday afternoon, the mercury soared to 91°F (33°C) in the city center, as reported by meteorologists. This breaks the prior high for this date, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was set just last year.
"Very warm conditions" were noted on forecast charts for the region.
Public Health Advisories
The weather service stated that Friday's weather posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for those at risk. Their guidance included:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave children or pets unattended in a hot car.
A Sharp Shift
This sharp rise in heat arrives just after a intense storm system that pummeled the area earlier in the week. That event brought high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to mountainous regions, triggering evacuation orders for millions residents.
Unfortunately, the conditions also resulted in a large avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Temperatures Easing
The outlook suggests cooler conditions is expected. Readings were predicted to drop to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by overnight.
Several cities that hit 90°F were Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Elsewhere, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were projected to see the high 80s.
In the coming days, central Los Angeles can expect weather in the 80s, with a further cooldown likely for the week ahead.
