Meteorologists have indicated a frosty commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are advised to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Continue In Spite of Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are planned to proceed, unlike last year's postponement. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," noted the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and open skies. Temperatures are expected to be low, making warm wraps vital, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for Friday

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are active for Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• People are advised to allow extra time for trips on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on public transport.

Readings Expected to Fall Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Warnings Released

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this indicated the weather was expected to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This includes a expected uptick in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.

The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, preparing for winter conditions is utterly paramount.
