The Latest Relaxed Game Mode Ignites Intense Debates Regarding AI Players, Experience Points, and Queue Times
Recently, Battlefield Studios introduced a fresh game mode called Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this option resembles the regular Breakthrough format but features several notable changes:
- Each team includes just 8 real players, with the rest made up of 32 bots.
- Actions performed by real players award full XP, while bot actions provide reduced XP.
- Only two maps can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Elements like Dogtags, accolades, and career stat updates have been turned off.
In short, this mode delivers on its name: it's a casual take of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think it's a good idea, since it provides additional choices for players looking for alternative ways to have fun with the title. However, if video games has shown one thing, it's that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, many BF6 fans are upset.
Community Responses: Anger to Praise
"Gamers prefer real players. Avoid making the mistakes of your competitors," reads one reply to the mode reveal. "Truly disappointing concept," says another. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player remarks, "It's unclear where we are going with this title," while someone else lists everything they believe to be broken in the game: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We do not require this AI-heavy playlist."
On the other hand, for every complaint, some gamers sharing how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to warm up, human participants keep it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," says one Reddit comment. "The community fails to see that there are gamers who actually go outside and can't play this game all the time. Allow them to find a middle ground," adds a different comment. One reply on Twitter explains that as they're "a parent gamer with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," while another praises the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Valid Concerns and Player Feedback
Despite the support, there are constructive reasons to complain about Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have pointed out that it will make wait times more extended for different playlists due to the large amount of playlists currently available. Similarly, some areas often face AI-filled matches in the existing playlists. It also seems somewhat counterintuitive that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of human gamers, despite it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.
Finally, a major complaints is that Battlefield Portal was meant to offer complete rewards, even against bots, but that got canned when they attempted to eliminate XP farming from the mode. So Casual Breakthrough seems like the community compromising in the middle, as per a Reddit comment. Another describes this mode as the devs "making a mistake significantly, I experienced great enjoyment in the initial release, what prompted them to change it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?
Should Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something to date with the latest installment, it is that they're listening and acting on player input. Tasks being too difficult got fixed rapidly, just like the required Redsec challenges. Chances are that, if their data shows this new playlist isn't performing to their standards, they won't be shy to change it again.
