The Mayor-Elect affirms he will make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that sparked debate throughout his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.
But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core policy, did not confirm he would live there promptly following his electoral win in November.
"This decision rested on the security of my family and the need to focusing my complete efforts on enacting the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area famous for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, the community will always live inside me and my work," he added.
A Contentious Issue
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
However his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a prominent family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which ended in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria home.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Within, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The estate, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
