Why Real Madrid Possess 'Total Confidence' in Teenager Pitarch
When an teenage makes club history in a key Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final berth.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.
Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.
Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him playing time during pre-season.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," said the player following his first appearance.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."
Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are surprised to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.
"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.
He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to play for either country at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive senior international match.
He has featured for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.
He played 74 minutes in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team pursue future success.
Following his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the field," he said after the success at Manchester.
